I Wrote a Moving HAndbook?

1/4/2019

Picture
After moving hundreds of clients over the last 8 years I decided it was time to explain how you can make your moving day painless and easy.

Learn how to:

~ Hire the right movers
~ Ask the right questions
~ Prepare your home and belongings
~ Move in the most efficient and cost effective way possible

Here's what a couple of our clients have said about this little handbook.

"I cannot tell you how much this book helped me. You'd think that moving is "Common Sense". But there were so many things in here that I wouldn't have thought of. You guys moved my 2-bedroom home across town in under THREE HOURS and said it was because of how prepared I was. Thanks!"
~ Taylor R.

"Loved this handbook. I'm telling my all friends and family who are moving about it. Due to my job, I move a lot. Not kidding. I saved over $200 compared to the last time I had to move. Thank you."  ~ Sandeep P.

Summer in Portland??

6/22/2018

Picture
 Liquid Sunshine!!

No, really. It's been raining and grey too far into our summer. Yesterday we were unloading a container for a client who moved here from Tennessee. He looks at me and asks:

"Isn't it June? Is this what summer is like here?"

I just laughed and said "Welcome to Portland.".

The good news for you who's reading this, we're used to this stuff. Moving in the rain is one of our specialties. Protecting your household items is the top priority for our crews and we have developed many, proprietary, techniques that help us do just that.

So, if you need to move, or have a POD or ABF Container unloaded and you find yourself stuck doing it on a rainy day, we are up for it and would be honored to help.

Call Scott at 503-985-8070 and let's talk about your move.

In the meantime, stay dry. :D

Who brings the moving truck??

9/8/2017

Picture
There's been a large influx of people moving to the Portland Metro area recently. Tons of new jobs are bringing folks the the Pacific Northwest. That means more moving for us. I wanted to take a moment and answer a few questions that I get from clients when they call to inquire about our services.

Why don't you have trucks?
Simple, it saves you money to rent and drive the truck. We provide Moving Labor only, and are not licensed by ODOT to Transport your household items.
We do all the loading and unloading.
We will assemble and disassemble furniture if needed.
We will have our own tools.
We will have our personal vehicles and meet at your load point and follow you to your unload point.

What will my moving crew bring with them?
Dollies
Appliance Dollies (By request)
Flat 4 wheel Dollies (By request)
Blankets/Furniture Pads
Plastic Furniture Wrap
Bungee Cords
Ratchet Straps
Basic Tools
Lifting Straps
Muscles
Smiles

(There are NO added fees for these items)

What do I need to do to be ready for my moving crew?
Be fully packed. (If you are not packed then our crew lead will offer the option to reschedule the move allow you time to pack.)
Have the truck there. (If we need it moved into a different position will will let you know and direct you.)
Please have hallways, stairs, and pathways clear. (We need to be able to safely carry your belongings to and from the truck.)
Please empty and disconnect any appliances we will be moving for you. (Washers, Dryers, Refrigerators, etc.)
Please have pets safely secured. (We love our furry little helpers but would never want to step on them or take a tumble due to a little critter under our feet.)

When does the job start and end?
The job starts when we begin carrying items to your truck. The job ends when you decide we're done.
If we arrive prior to or at the agreed start time and you are not there then the clock will start at the agreed start time. Due to weather and traffic conditions there are occasions where we could be later than the scheduled start time. In those cases we do not start the clock until we are there and carrying items to the truck.

Will my moving crew pack my belongings for me?
No. We are not packers. We load and unload. As mentioned above, if you need us to take apart beds or other furniture items and put them back together after unloading then we will do that.

Do you move Pianos or Pool Tables?
No we don't.
For pianos you can call:  http://www.michellespiano.com/portland-piano-moving/
For Pool Tables call Chris at: http://www.portlandpooltablemovers.com/
In certain circumstances we will move a small, upright piano.
If we agree to move a piano there will be a $75 fee added to the total of the job.
We are equipped to move upright pianos from main floor to main floor only.
We cannot move pianos up or down stairs.
We can only move a piano with a minimum of 3 movers on the job.

How and When do I pay my movers?
We accept cash payment at the end of your move.
Your crew lead will notify you of the amount owed based on the hourly rate, start time, and end time. We break down to the nearest quarter of an hour.
Please have cash.
We DO NOT accept Credit or Debit Cards.
(In certain cases we will accept a check but that must be prearranged 48 hours prior to your move date and and agreed to by our owner.)

Can we help with the move?
We don't mind if you want to help as long as you understand that the crew lead has final decision on how and when things are loaded in the truck and how things are carried to and from the truck. If you don't mind taking a little direction from us then, Sure, jump right in there with us. The more hands we have the less time it takes. That saves you money.

A Moving Estimate?

6/24/2016

Picture
I'm often asked a common question when folks call me.

"Can I get an estimate?" or "How long do you think my move will take?".

That's a tricky question to answer. In most cases there's really no way to predict how long your move will take.
Here are some factors and conditions that can cause a move to go shorter or longer than usual:

Carry Distance: During Loading or Unloading there have been occasions where we've had a long distance from where the truck is parked to the entrance to the door. I recall one move a few years ago where the client had to park the truck about 100 yards from her apartment. The closer the truck is to the home, the less time it takes to load it.

Truck Size: Having a truck that is large enough to fit all of your belongings in one trip means less time your move takes. For example; A few days ago we had a client that wanted us to move her from a 4 bedroom town-home. Her move included a motorized bed, treadmill, elliptical, multi-use weight machine, as well as a house and garage full of boxes and standard furniture. The problem was she rented a 14 foot Uhaul. When I explained that it wasn't all going to fit in one trip she was surprised. Her move took 2 trips. Had she rented a 26 foot uhaul it could have been completed in 1 trip and saved her $180.00. I always say I'd rather have TOO MUCH truck than not enough.

A Wonderful Review from Peter about super movers pdx in Portland, OR.

Picture
We recently had the honor of helping a wonderful family. They needed help moving a piano, weight machine, treadmill, and a recumbent bike as well as a couch and some furniture items from an upper and lower floor to the main floor of their home. It was a challenging job but as our clients always find out, we're up for any challenge. Here's what Peter had to say on Google about that day.

"We had a challenging move. A piano, a 400 pound all in one weight machine, a big ass treadmill (its big ass and it is designed to help reduce a big ass) a couple a flights of stairs, narrow hall ways and these guys did a GREAT job. Not a single nick on any wall. What they had to take apart to move, the weight machine and the treadmill they put back together without a single glitch. They are very professional and think through the process to come up with the best plan. And finally they are nice folks. When they were done my wife had a big smile on her face and thanked me. They did all the work and she gave me the credit for making a great choice to hire them! If you want a drama free move hire these folks!" ~ Peter

Peter, you guys were ready to go when we got there. That makes a HUGE difference. Thank you o much for your business and this 5 Star review on Google.

Need Moving Help? Super Movers PDX in Portland, OR tells you how to save $200 on your next move.

I get calls every now and then from potential customers who ask the question "Do you guys bring a truck?". There's even been one occasion when I've shown up for a move and the customer asked me "Where's your truck?".  This is why I always explain to folks on that initial call the difference between a moving company versus a moving labor company.

What are the differences?
A Moving / Labor company supplies everything but the truck. You rent and drive the truck.

How does this help you?
It saves you TONS of money. The lowest price I have found in the Portland Metro area for two movers, equipment, and a truck is about $115 per hour with a 3 hour minimum. That company is a Licensed ODOT moving company that is Bonded and Insured here in the state of Oregon per the ODOT guidelines for Transporting household good.

We charge you $30 per hour, per mover, with a 2 hour minimum. This includes Hand Trucks, Flat Dollies, Appliance Dollies, Furniture Pads / Blankets, Ratchet Straps, Bungees, Tie Downs, Plastic Furniture Wrapping, Tools for assembling or dis-assembling furniture, plus our expertise. We have over 10 years of experience loading and packing trucks with household items.

Let's do the math:
Ordinary Moving company:
5 hour moving job at $115 per hour=
Total $575

Super Movers PDX:
5 hour moving job at $60 per hour= $300
Your Truck Rental: $80 for the day
Total: $380

That's almost a $200 difference!
(Can you say "No Brainer"? Really, you should be on the phone with me right now scheduling your move.)

Can you guys fit all of this in the truck?
Probably. Of course renting the right size truck is helpful and can determine how many trips your move will take. But our experience allows us to do things safely and efficiently with your belongings inside of a truck that most rookies can't do. It's been called "Playing Tetris with Furniture". We understand weight loads and support strength and how to maximize the amount of space the truck provides.

So, now you understand how using Super Movers PDX can save you money. A lot of money.
If you have a family member, a friend, a co-worker, anyone looking to move soon... now you know who to call.

Thanks for your support and have a day to remember!

Are You Ready to move?

8/21/2014

Picture
No one likes to move. In Portland, I have yet to encounter a client that enjoys moving.
But how can we all make it as painless and stress free as possible?

BE READY!!

I'd say about 50% of the time our crews show up on moves we find our clients aren't completely packed or aren't ready to move. This can vary from a few boxes needing to be taped up to clients looking like they forgot they scheduled us to move them that day. This poses a problem for us for a number of reasons.

Common Questions:

"Can you guys start loading the furniture while we pack everything else? Then you can load all the boxes and stuff?"

~We pack your truck in a certain order to maximize the amount of space in it. We always start with boxes and furniture items that provide a stable base for more boxes. This allows us to do you move in as few "trips" possible by being able to pack the truck as tightly as possible. This also helps protect your belongings. A tightly packed truck means less movement as you're driving to your new home or storage unit.
~When things aren't packed then we end up waiting around for our customers to pack their things. This takes time and cost you money. We're on the clock after the contract is signed and having our crew stand around and wait for you to pack your things can get expensive for you.
~To have us carrying dressers, chests, beds, couches, etc. around your home while you are packing and stacking can be dangerous. We can't be stepping over boxes and other items in hallways while carrying your heavy things. We could get hurt, items or property could get damaged, your family, friends, or pets could get hurt.

"Can you please be careful with our TV's? How do you protect those in the truck?"

We have the ability to protect your electronics, mirrors, pictures, etc inside the truck. HOWEVER, in most cases our clients prefer to transport those in their own private vehicles. It is safer if it will fit in your car or truck AND your expensive or fragile items are in your possession the entire day. YOU supervise who has it and where it is at all times. I have owned this company for years and we have NEVER damaged a Television. If you have the means to put your TV in the original packaging then that is another great way to protect it.

"Can you move this dresser over to that wall? Wait, I don't like that there. Let's move it over here. Wait, that doesn't look right either. How about...."

We often are asked to place furniture where it will eventually end up
permanently. However, we do run into clients that aren't sure where things will end up and during the unloading of the truck we are asked to "...move this to there and that to here." We ask that if you need us to help you "Decorate" and "Arrange" we will do that after the truck is fully unloaded. Why? Because we find that once the truck is unloaded we can focus more of our attention on helping you. Arranging your furniture is something we will be happy to do for you but we want to handle one thing at a time. Remember, we are on the clock until you tell us you don't need us anymore.
